Accessibility Statement

Version 1.0 · Last updated

Our commitment

Aussie Alt Christian aims to be usable by everyone, including people with disabilities and people using assistive technologies. Accessibility is part of our brand identity, not an afterthought.

This statement describes how we work to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, which is the standard adopted by Australian government and recommended by the Australian Human Rights Commission.

What we’ve done

The current site is designed with accessibility in mind from the ground up:

  • Atkinson Hyperlegible as our primary font, designed specifically for readers with low vision and reading difficulties.
  • Semantic HTML structure — headings cascade in order (H1, H2, H3, H4), pages have a single H1, and we use semantic elements (<nav>, <article>, <main>) so screen readers can navigate.
  • Australian English declared at the page level (lang="en-AU") so screen readers pronounce content correctly.
  • Colour contrast meeting WCAG AA throughout. All body text against background colours exceeds 4.5:1; headings exceed 3:1.
  • Visible focus states on every interactive element — useful for keyboard navigation.
  • Minimum touch target size of 44×44px for all clickable elements.
  • Line-height of 1.8 on body text, reducing cognitive load.
  • Body text left-aligned, never justified — justified text creates uneven word spacing that impairs readability for people with dyslexia.
  • Descriptive link text (“Read our post on faith and pastoral care”, not “click here”).
  • Cookie consent for the comments widget can be declined without losing access to the rest of the site.

What we’re still working on

  • Image alt text — every image must have descriptive alternative text. Where you find an image without alt text or with poor alt text, please tell us.
  • Video and podcast accessibility — when we publish video or audio, we commit to providing accurate transcripts and (for video) captions. Auto-generated captions are not sufficient; we use professionally edited captions where video is published.
  • PDF accessibility — when we offer PDF downloads, they are produced with semantic tags, alt text, and proper heading structure.

Known limitations

This is an honest list of where we currently fall short:

  • The Hyvor Talk comment widget is a third-party embed. We have minimal control over its accessibility. Hyvor has stated that their widget is WCAG-compliant, but we have not independently verified this.
  • HubSpot’s embedded contact form is similarly third-party. We have applied brand styling but cannot guarantee every element meets AA.
  • Cookie banner UX is functional but not deeply tested with screen readers.

We are not yet third-party audited. An external accessibility audit is on the to-do list before any push for broader reach.

Reporting an accessibility issue

If you encounter content or features that are inaccessible, please tell us:

When reporting, please include:

  • The page URL.
  • A description of the issue.
  • The assistive technology you were using (screen reader, browser, OS).

We aim to respond to accessibility reports within 5 business days.
